Hackers threaten leak of Urich WhatsApp

A website set up overnight is threatening to release private messages of Netanyahu's senior adviser Yonatan Urich, while parts of conversations with journalists have already circulated on social media

Yonatan Urich

The WhatsApp account of Yonatan Urich, a senior adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has apparently been hacked and leaked online. A website created specifically in the past 24 hours is threatening to expose the adviser's private conversations, while several social media accounts have begun circulating what they claim are excerpts from internal chats.

Among the conversations circulating on social media are purported exchanges Urich held with former Netanyahu adviser Topaz Luk, as well as with commentator Amit Segal and media figure Yaakov Bardugo. At this stage, it is unclear whether the content is authentic material leaked from the device, or whether the materials, screenshots or images were created and edited using artificial intelligence tools.

Under Israeli privacy law, it is prohibited to publish personal material hacked from a citizen's phone unlawfully, and we will not be publishing the conversations.

The current incident comes just two weeks after Haaretz reported that Urich had developed a dedicated media monitoring tool using the artificial intelligence engine "Claude." The tool was designed to identify media mentions in real time, send customized alerts and create automatic summaries of current events. That tool was exposed after its public code remained visible online and contained a security vulnerability, and it's possible that there is a connection between the incidents and that possibility is being investigated.
