Rabies outbreak near northern kibbutz

"Anyone who came into contact — to ER now"

Ministry of Health urgently calls on anyone who came into contact with the animal or with stray animals at Kibbutz Gesher to contact health bureaus

Health Ministry: "Anyone Who Came into Contact — Go to Emergency Immediately"

The Ministry of Health announced Thursday that a jackal infected with rabies was found near Kibbutz Gesher, on the northern axis near the Shulamit outpost.

One person was exposed to the infected jackal and was immediately referred for preventive medical treatment. Health Ministry professionals are continuing an epidemiological investigation to assess the scope of exposure in the area.

Urgent call to the public and anyone who was in the area

The Ministry of Health is calling on anyone who came into contact, or whose animals came into contact, in the area of the incident with the infected jackal or with a stray animal, between October 14, 2026 and October 28, 2026 inclusive, to urgently contact the Afula Health Bureau at 4 Yerushalayim Street (telephone: 04-6099000), or the health bureau nearest to their place of residence. The contact is for the purpose of evaluating the need for preventive treatment against rabies, and there is no need to schedule an appointment in advance.

The Ministry emphasizes that after working hours and during the weekend, one should go directly to the emergency room at the nearest hospital.

In addition, the Ministry of Health asks the public to follow these guidelines:

Parents of children: Parents who were in the area with their children are asked to check with them urgently whether they came into contact with the jackal or with other stray animals, and if necessary to contact the health bureau.

Pet owners: Residents whose pet came into contact or may have come into contact with the infected jackal are called to urgently contact the municipal veterinarian for treatment instructions.

Spreading the information: The public is asked to pass on the message to anyone who was in the kibbutz area and nearby communities during the stated period.

The Ministry of Health reminds the public that in any case of a bite or scratch from an animal, one should immediately wash the area with running water and soap for about 10 minutes, disinfect the wound, and contact the nearest health bureau as soon as possible.
