The Face of Evil

Hamas tunnel footage shows Oct. 7 planning

Qatar's Al Jazeera broadcasts underground videos showing Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar and the entire military council of Hamas — all since eliminated by Israel — in meetings preparing the massacre, alongside recordings from 2021 and a rocket factory beneath Gaza

Al Jazeera Airs 2021 Sinwar-Deif Call and Deif's October 7 Order | WATCH

Al Jazeera has broadcast a recorded conversation between Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif. The network says the call took place after the IDF's Operation Guardian of the Walls in 2021. It presented a document dated October 5, 2023, which it describes as the operational order Deif signed for the October 7 massacre. The document sets the start of the attack for 6:30 a.m.

The material aired Friday evening on the program What Is Hidden Is Greater. The program included archival footage of Deif and other senior commanders of Hamas's military wing. The program also presented documents that the network says shed light on how the attack was planned.

According to the program, Deif signed the October 5 order after a six-hour staff meeting. The program also presented a second document. It says this document comes from a February 2023 meeting of Hamas's inner military command and records the decision to start preparing for the attack, months before it was launched.

One clip shows Deif wearing a hat as he walks through a tunnel and talks with the men around him. Other footage shows senior commanders greeting each other, assembling for a meeting and praying together underground. In another segment, Deif stands in Hamas's operations room, examining models of Israeli tanks and discussing a battle plan with brigade commanders.

Separate footage places Deif alongside Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh in a rocket manufacturing workshop.

Both Deif and Yahya Sinwar were killed in the war that followed. Deif grew up in the Khan Younis refugee camp and had known Sinwar since childhood. He commanded the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades until Israel killed him in a strike near Khan Younis in July 2024.

Sinwar was killed on October 16, 2024, in the Tel Sultan neighborhood of Rafah. On October 16 of this year, the IDF released an operational account of that encounter.
