In a surprising alignment on foreign aid policy, US Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has announced plans to expedite the termination of annual US military assistance to Israel, building on recent comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu, in a recent interview with The Economist, outlined his vision to gradually reduce Israel's dependence on US aid "down to zero" over the next decade.

The current $3.8 billion annual package, established under a 2016 memorandum of understanding, is set to expire in 2028 without full renewal, allowing Israel to achieve greater self-sufficiency amid its "roaring economy," as Graham described it.

Responding directly on X (formerly Twitter) on January 9, 2026, Graham welcomed Netanyahu's stance and vowed to push for a faster timeline. "I will be presenting a proposal to Israel and the Trump Administration to dramatically expedite the timetable," Graham stated, emphasizing that the move would free up billions for the US military.

As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, Graham holds significant influence over foreign aid allocations.

Graham, a longtime staunch advocate for Israel and US-Israel relations, framed the shift as a win-win, highlighting Israel's economic strength and technological prowess in defense. "This is about empowering our ally to stand on its own while bolstering America's defenses," he added in his post.

Neither the Israeli government nor the Trump Administration has issued an immediate response to Graham's announcement.
