Major General (Res.) Eliezer "Chaynee" Marom, former commander of the Israel Navy, confirmed on Thursday that the IDF’s operational freedom in Lebanon is currently limited by strategic coordination with the United States.

Speaking with 103FM, Marom addressed controversial remarks made by Minister Avi Dichter, who claimed that Israel's hand is partially tied in the northern arena. Marom validated Dichter’s assessment, stating, "He told the truth. We have limitations in Lebanon. The world's greatest superpower has [its own] interests."

Marom explained that the Lebanese front cannot be viewed in isolation. Instead, it is inextricably linked to the broader confrontation with Iran and American regional strategy.

Looking toward a resolution, Marom noted that if the tensions with Iran conclude with a diplomatic agreement, that deal must dictate the terms for Hezbollah as well. "If the Iran event ends in an agreement, it must also project onto Hezbollah," Marom stated. "We hope it will be a good agreement."

The Price for Northern Residents

Minister Dichter acknowledged that these strategic limitations are "particularly difficult" for the residents of northern Israel, who remain under the direct threat of Hezbollah. However, both he and Marom suggested that the overarching goal of neutralizing the Iranian nuclear threat currently necessitates this high-level coordination with Washington, even at the cost of tactical freedom on the border.
