In a wild melee that turned a Lower Manhattan rally into a powder keg, socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was relentlessly pursued and heckled out of Foley Square by a Bronx protester who blasted him as an "antisemite," leading to a shoving match with the pol's staffer before Mamdani sped away in his SUV, per the New York Post.

The dramatic clash unfolded Friday, October 11, 2025, as Mamdani, a frontrunner in the mayoral race, rallied with fellow left-wing politicians and activists in defense of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who faces federal charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.

Video footage captures the chaos: The protester, identified as 55-year-old Raul Rivera from the Bronx, tails Mamdani to his black SUV, unleashing a barrage of accusations while the candidate ignores him and climbs inside."Antisemite! Denounce Sharia law! Denounce Hezbollah! You can’t do it!" Rivera bellows, his voice cutting through the crowd as Mamdani approaches the vehicle with his back turned. "Walk the narrow or you’re going to jail with Tish!" he adds, referencing James' nickname amid her legal woes.

Tensions boil over when a Mamdani team member steps in as Rivera edges too close, shoving him back after the agitator snarls that Mamdani is a "f–king rat." The much shorter Rivera, donning a backward baseball cap and clutching what appears to be a President Trump flag, pushes back repeatedly, yelling "Get off me, bro!" multiple times in the heated exchange.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, present but uninvolved in the scuffle, seizes the moment to address the camera: "One of the good things is we’re out here to allow people like this to do this. In an authoritarian regime, they’d be thrown away, but we protect everybody, including them," he says, flashing a peace sign.

As the SUV peels away, a woman behind the wheel shouts at Rivera to "get a job," capping the explosive encounter.

Rivera has a history with Mamdani: In June 2025, he was arrested for allegedly biting a 29-year-old female campaign volunteer on the hand during a Lower Manhattan news conference, where he accused Mamdani of being anti-Israel. The volunteer required hospital treatment, and Rivera faced assault charges.

Friday's fury seems tied to Mamdani's recent statements: On the second anniversary of Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack, the Democratic socialist lambasted the Israeli government for waging a "genocidal war" in Gaza, accusing it and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of apartheid against Palestinians, drawing bipartisan backlash. Mamdani has refused to disavow his past use of the phrase "globalize the intifada" but has emphasized his support for Israel and denounced antisemitism.

The rally itself was a fiery stand against James' indictment, which Mamdani decried as "a blatant miscarriage of justice" and "a shameless act of political retribution" by the Trump administration. James secured a $355 million civil judgment against Trump and his organization last year for inflating real estate values, penalties later overturned on appeal, fueling Trump's ongoing vendetta.

Mamdani's campaign has faced scrutiny, including $13,000 in illegal foreign donations and backlash over his views on Israel. He declined comment on the incident, and Rivera could not be reached. As one Democratic councilman quipped of Rivera: "He harasses everyone. He’s a loser."

But with Mamdani's mayoral bid heating up, this street-level showdown highlights the raw divisions plaguing NYC politics.
