What should have been a brief thrill turned into a prolonged nightmare at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland, Oregon, in June 2024. The "AtmosFEAR" ride suddenly stopped at its highest point, leaving 28 passengers strapped into their seats and suspended upside down approximately 50 feet above the ground.
Instead of the few minutes of excitement they had anticipated, riders found themselves trapped for roughly 25 minutes, staring down at the ground below. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and firefighters were forced to assist in manually lowering the attraction. Officials initially even considered using ropes to rescue the suspended passengers from the height.
Two girls, then aged 13 and 14, were among those trapped on the ride. During subsequent court proceedings, they described the harrowing minutes they endured. One recalled seeing tears streaming from the eyes of people around her, and testified that after several minutes, some riders began vomiting.
