Politico Stand: CEO Tells Staff to Support Israel or Resign Immediately

Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, has made it clear to Politico staff that support for Israel's right to exist is a non-negotiable core value of the company.

The leadership of Politico, one of the most influential news organizations in the United States, has delivered a firm message to its editorial staff regarding the company's core principles. Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of parent company Axel Springer, convened a meeting following an internal letter from journalists who accused him of using the outlet to promote a personal political agenda, specifically his vocal support for Israel. Döpfner countered by stating that no one is forced to work at Axel Springer against their core values, and if the company's foundational principles, which include support for Israel’s right to exist, are not a magnet for an employee, they should consider working elsewhere where such values do not play a central role.

The internal tension was sparked by two opinion pieces authored by Döpfner, in which he urged Europe to stand with the U.S. and Israel against Iran and argued that European aid to Palestinians has inadvertently funded terrorism. During a 40-minute internal call, the CEO intensified his rhetoric, describing the regime in Tehran as a mass murderer and a terrorist organization due to the actions of its proxies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. He emphasized that for Axel Springer, Zionism represents the right to self-determination for Israel and its status as a safe haven for the Jewish people. While he clarified that this does not preclude daily criticism of the Israeli government, he insisted that the fundamental right of the state to exist is a cornerstone of the firm's identity.

This stance is deeply rooted in the history of the German media giant, as its founder, Axel Springer, established reconciliation with the Jewish people and the defense of Israel's rights as mandatory principles for all employees after World War II. Despite the acquisition of Politico in 2021, these values remain transparent and non-negotiable. Senior editors at Politico, including the incoming editor-in-chief and the CEO, did not express opposition to Döpfner’s statements, reinforcing the idea that editorial independence exists alongside these core company values. The confrontation highlights a growing debate within global media organizations regarding the balance between traditional journalistic objectivity and the explicit promotion of foundational corporate values in a polarized geopolitical climate.
