In a dramatic development on Capitol Hill, the U.S. House Oversight Committee has voted to recommend holding former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress. The move comes after the couple failed to appear for testimony in accordance with subpoenas issued as part of an investigation into their ties to offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The committee approved the recommendations with unexpected bipartisan support.

Notably, the report indicates that several Democratic committee members, including some identified with the progressive wing of the party, crossed the aisle to vote alongside Republicans.

Committee Chairman James Comer emphasized the legal weight of the demands, stating that subpoenas are "not a recommendation but a legal obligation." Comer argued that the Clintons were obligated to appear and that their refusal undermines the oversight capabilities of Congress.

Legal representatives for the Clintons argued that the subpoenas were not legally valid. They reportedly offered a compromise in the form of a private, unrecorded interview, but this proposal was rejected by the Committee.

The recommendation now moves to the full House of Representatives for a floor vote, which is expected to take place in February. If the House approves the measure, the decision on whether to file formal charges will be transferred to the Department of Justice.

A conviction for contempt of Congress carries serious penalties, including a fine of up to $100,000 and a prison sentence of up to one year.
