Dolly Parton on Why She Never Had Children

The country music icon has spoken openly about the chronic condition affecting 1 in 10 women that prevented her from having biological children and how she redefined motherhood

Country music legend Dolly Parton has been candid over the years about the medical circumstances that led to her not having biological children. Behind her trademark smile and tireless energy lies a story of living with endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide.

In her thirties, at the height of her career, Parton underwent emergency surgery for a partial hysterectomy due to complications from the disease. The procedure ultimately made it impossible for her to conceive. While the diagnosis and surgery marked an emotionally difficult period, Parton has consistently chosen to view her situation through a positive lens. She has noted that not having biological children freed her to devote her time, energy, and resources to nurturing millions of children around the world.

Through extensive charitable initiatives, most notably her Imagination Library program, which has donated hundreds of millions of books to children, Parton became a maternal figure to countless people. "When you don't have children of your own, G-d makes sure they're all your children," she once said. She publicly revealed her condition in 2008.

Parton's story brings awareness to the quiet struggle many women face with endometriosis, demonstrating how meaning and profound generosity can emerge even from medical hardship.
