A mysterious tree-covered landmass measuring approximately 10,000 square meters suddenly appeared in British Columbia's Williston Reservoir in Canada, only to disappear weeks later from the location where it was first documented.

The phenomenon came to light after a local boater photographed the massive floating mass. Officials at BC Hydro, the provincial electric utility company, initially suspected the images might be AI-generated. However, satellite imagery from July 21 confirmed the island's existence roughly 100 kilometers from the Bennett Dam.

"This is definitely something we haven't encountered before", said company spokesperson Bob Gammer. Yet by August 5, satellite images showed the island had vanished. "That doesn't mean it sank to the reservoir floor. It's possible it drifted back to a more sheltered area along the shoreline", he explained.

Scientists believe this wasn't a true island but rather an enormous accumulation of trees, roots, and organic material that had built up along the shore over many years, eventually developing vegetation on its surface. The reservoir's elevated water levels, which reached capacity this year for the first time in 14 years, likely detached the mass from the shoreline, setting it adrift.

The mystery took another turn in late August when the island was spotted again near the Ospika River area, approximately 32 kilometers from its original sighting location. This discovery reinforced the assessment that the "vanishing island" had simply been drifting across the reservoir.
