The Jewish community in Iran has taken a highly visible step to reinforce its compliance and historical alignment with the official stances of the Islamic Republic. Following the sudden death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, an official delegation representing the Jewish population in the city of Shiraz traveled to participate directly in the memorial ceremonies and mass funeral processions. This public display of solidarity comes during a highly sensitive transition of power within the Iranian governance system.
The chairman of the Shiraz Jewish community, Amir Aala Salari, issued a comprehensive statement to domestic state media channels in which he directly praised the legacy of the deceased leader. Salari stated that "The late leader showed, from the beginning of the era of the Islamic Republic, a special attitude toward monotheistic religions, and especially toward the Jewish community". He further emphasized this continuity by noting, "Our late leader, from the beginning of the era of the Islamic Republic, showed a special attitude toward the Abrahamic religions, and especially toward the Jewish community in Iran".
To contextualize the safety of his community, the chairman referenced the ideological framework established during the founding of the current regime. He cited the traditional distinction, originating with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, that "Judaism is completely separate from Zionism" or that "Judaism is separate from Zionism". According to Salari, this foundational view is precisely what enabled a safe living environment for followers of different faiths in the country.
The statement also explicitly focused on reinforcing the historical patriotism of the Jewish population during previous existential threats to the nation. Salari reminded the public of his community's active participation during the regional war against Iraq four decades ago. He declared, "During the Sacred Defense war, the Jewish community contributed to the front and made sacrifices for the homeland in the war with Iraq in the 1980s. Ayatollah Khomeini of blessed memory, during his visit to the memorial house of the Abrahamic religions, beautifully demonstrated solidarity, brotherhood and equality".
The central and most politically significant portion of Salari’s declaration addressed the immediate leadership transition unfolding in the capital. The community leader strongly condemned the specific circumstances surrounding the late leader’s death, categorizing it as a heinous killing perpetrated by external forces. He went on to say, "The despicable killing of Ayatollah Khomeini by the American-Israeli enemy did not succeed in stopping his ideals and lofty worldview. Ayatollah Mojtaba Khomeini became the young leader, and the Jewish community declared its loyalty to this honorable leader on that very day".
Following this condemnation, the Shiraz delegation immediately finalized their formal declaration of loyalty to the incoming successor, the late leader's son, Mojtaba Khamenei. This public support is particularly crucial because the new leader has been seen only rarely in public since the start of the broader military campaign in February. Analysts observe that minorities in Iran face an institutional obligation to demonstrate absolute solidarity with new leadership during volatile handovers of power. Salari concluded his remarks by stating that "the Iranian Jewish community showed its enthusiastic presence at the funeral and farewell ceremony for this spiritual genius".
