Migrant Boat Strikes Swimmer: Teen Injured Off Sardinia

A routine beach outing turned into a dramatic rescue operation at Su Giudeu beach in Sardinia when a motorboat carrying migrants struck a 17-year-old girl swimming close to shore.

According to Italian media reports, the teenager was enjoying the water with her family when the vessel approached the swimming area at high speed. Initial reconstructions of the incident indicate that the boat collided with the girl before continuing toward a nearby beach without stopping.

Swimmers and lifeguards in the area rushed to assist the injured teenager. She sustained serious injuries and was at risk of drowning due to the impact and shock. Emergency services airlifted her by helicopter to Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari. Medical officials later reported that her condition had improved beyond initial expectations.

The incident, however, did not end with the collision.

Italian authorities say the boat was carrying 14 men from Algeria. After reaching Tuerredda beach, all passengers disembarked and attempted to flee inland. Carabinieri police forces, alerted to the incident, launched an immediate search operation and quickly located the group.

The primary suspect is a 28-year-old Algerian man who investigators believe was operating the vessel. He was arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration and causing serious bodily harm. The boat itself was a fiberglass craft equipped with an approximately 85-horsepower motor.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities reviewing video footage that captured the boat's approach to the swimming area. According to preliminary accounts published in local media, it remains unclear whether those aboard the vessel immediately realized they had struck someone.

The incident has reignited intense public debate in Italy surrounding the persistent issue of migrant boats arriving on the country's shores.
