Elon Musk has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s flagship tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” in what appears to be the most serious public rupture yet between the former allies.

The legislation, passed by the House of Representatives last month, features sweeping multi-trillion dollar tax cuts, expanded defense spending, and increased borrowing authority. It forms a central pillar of Trump’s second-term economic agenda and has been hailed by the former president as the “big beautiful bill.”

But Musk, who abruptly left the Trump administration just last week after a 129-day stint leading a cost-cutting task force known as Doge, unloaded on the plan in a series of scathing posts on X. “Shame on those who voted for it,” he wrote, adding that the bill is “outrageous, pork-filled” and would balloon the federal deficit to an “unsustainable” $2.5 trillion.

The billionaire tech mogul had previously called the bill merely “disappointing,” but Tuesday’s outburst marks his first open break with Trump since his May 31 departure from government. Although Trump praised Musk upon his exit, saying the SpaceX and Tesla CEO “will, always, be with us, helping all the way”, the latest comments signal a dramatic turn.

Musk also issued a political warning: “In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people.” Previously, Musk had pledged to financially back primary challengers against Republicans who opposed Trump’s legislative priorities.

The bill’s projected deficit increase, estimated at $600 billion in the next fiscal year alone, has drawn concern from fiscal hawks. Musk’s latest broadside could intensify Republican infighting as Trump pushes to solidify control of his party ahead of the 2026 midterms
