Syrian authorities on Tuesday officially confirmed for the first time that an agreement has been reached between the Trump administration, Israel, and Syria to remove nuclear materials stored at a secret facility in the country. According to the official announcement, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected to oversee the removal of materials from the site, previously known as "Site 99."

The Syrian Atomic Energy Authority stated that "we continue to cooperate transparently and closely with the IAEA, the United States, and friendly nations to address the legacy of the previous regime." Syrian officials described the agreement as a significant step in clearing the country of the nuclear legacy left by the Assad regime, which collapsed in December 2024.

As reported Monday evening, the facility was used during the Assad era to store materials remaining from Syria's nuclear program. Among the materials stored at the site is "yellowcake" — a substance extracted from uranium ore — alongside other nuclear materials. American officials clarified that while the material cannot be used to produce a standard nuclear weapon, it could be employed to create a "dirty bomb" that disperses radioactive material.

Israeli authorities monitored the site closely and made clear to the Americans that they would not accept leaving the material in place. Following the fall of the Assad regime, the Israel Defense Forces bombed the entrances to the site to prevent access, and for over a year, Israel and the United States held discussions on how to handle the situation.

The Syrian Atomic Energy Authority announced that Damascus will host an IAEA delegation in the coming days. During the visit, a "joint statement on the significant progress Syria is making in this area" is expected to be released, according to the official announcement.
