A serious crash involving an oil tanker triggered a large, intense fire on the northbound lanes of Interstate 287 near Exit 2A early this morning, completely shutting down the highway.

The incident was reported shortly after 6:00 AM today. First responders arrived to find heavy fire conditions with flames rapidly spreading from the overturned or damaged tanker.

Due to the size and intensity of the blaze, the incident was quickly escalated to a second alarm by 6:21 AM. A full county hazardous materials (HazMat) team was recalled to handle potential fuel spills and environmental contamination.

Mutual aid tankers were requested from surrounding communities, including Monroe, Plainsboro, and Cranbury, to supply large volumes of water and firefighting foam to battle the fire.

Northbound I-287 remains fully closed in the area as crews work to extinguish the fire and contain the hazardous materials. Southbound lanes may also be affected by heavy smoke and emergency operations.

No information has been released yet on injuries or the cause of the initial crash.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Significant delays are expected throughout the day.
