Turkish prosecutors have filed an indictment against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 35 other Israeli officials over the interception of the “Sumud” Gaza flotilla in October 2025, seeking prison sentences totaling thousands of years, according to Turkish media reports.

The indictment, issued by Istanbul’s chief prosecutor, accuses those named of involvement in a military operation against civilians in international waters. Prosecutors are reportedly seeking up to 4,596 years in prison, with a minimum proposed sentence of more than 1,100 years.

Those charged include Defense Minister Israel Katz and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the move reflects Ankara’s commitment to international law.

Turkey had previously issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials in November 2025, following the flotilla incident.

The “Sumud” flotilla, which set sail in late August 2025, included dozens of vessels and hundreds of activists from multiple countries attempting to reach Gaza. Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla and detained more than 400 participants, including prominent activists, before deporting them.

Israeli officials sharply rejected the indictment. Netanyahu accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of hypocrisy and dismissed the charges, while reiterating Israel’s commitment to continue its military campaign against Iran and its regional proxies.

Katz described the indictment as baseless, calling it a “grand absurdity,” while Ben-Gvir responded with a direct and profane message directed at Erdoğan.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry responded by condemning the Israeli statements and escalating its rhetoric, accusing Netanyahu of severe crimes and vowing to pursue accountability.

The exchange marks a further deterioration in already strained relations between Israel and Turkey, with the flotilla incident becoming a new focal point in the diplomatic and legal confrontation between the two countries.
