Tornado Strikes France: Dozens Injured, Homes Destroyed

A powerful tornado struck the small village of Pomas in southwestern France on Monday, leaving a trail of widespread destruction. The village, located south of the city of Carcassonne, sustained severe damage as winds reached approximately 117 kilometers per hour (73 mph). According to updated figures from local authorities, 39 people were injured in the incident. Fifteen victims required hospitalization for medical treatment, with two currently in serious condition.

The tornado caused extensive infrastructure damage throughout the community. Preliminary assessments indicate that roughly 300 homes suffered direct impact, roofs were torn off, walls collapsed, and significant property was destroyed. One resident, identified as Pierre, described the scale of devastation to local media: "Half the village is destroyed."

Pierre, who witnessed the storm firsthand, described the tornado as "a giant red and yellow chimney" spinning through the air. He added in shock: "There's a huge castle in the village, and a third of it collapsed, even though we're talking about stones that have stood in place for a thousand years."

Another resident named Chantal recounted the terrifying moments: "I heard an enormous noise... and then I saw everything flying through the air and my roof collapsed above my head. I definitely don't have a home left... I was very scared. I thought it was the end, that it was my final hour."

One man reported that his pregnant wife was injured when their home collapsed on her during the storm. Her condition has not been disclosed.

More than 120 emergency personnel were dispatched to the area immediately following the incident, including fire crews, paramedics, and police. Local authorities reported that approximately 2,800 homes across 10 villages in the region were left without electricity due to damage to power infrastructure.

Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemaréchal, deputy prefect for the area, told French media that no missing persons have been reported. She also revised the casualty count downward from 41 to 39 after more precise verification of the data.

The extreme weather also affected other events in the region. The famous Vuelta a España cycling race was forced to cancel its third stage, which was taking place in the Aude department of southwestern France, after a severe hailstorm forced riders to seek shelter approximately 15 kilometers before the finish line.

French authorities issued an orange weather alert (the second-highest level on a three-tier scale) for large areas of southwestern France, warning of additional thunderstorms, power outages, and transportation disruptions. Airports in Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, and northern Paris reported flight delays and cancellations.

According to Météo-France, the country's national weather service, France experiences an average of several dozen tornadoes each year. The current incident follows a summer of exceptional heat waves and extensive wildfires in France, with the southwestern region particularly affected by a fire that destroyed approximately 42,000 hectares, one of the largest blazes since World War II.
