New footage from France shows violent clashes in the streets, with large police formations moving under sustained attack.
Officers were targeted with fireworks fired directly at them, along with stones, concrete blocks and heavy objects hurled from the crowd.
The street filled with thick smoke from tear gas canisters, pyrotechnics and exploding fireworks. Police are seen using tactical shields and maintaining tight formations for protection.
Pavements in the area were littered with broken stones, concrete and plaster torn from nearby buildings. Graffiti was visible on shops and banks as officers moved barriers.
The scene remained covered in heavy smoke and stones scattered across the asphalt. Dozens of protesters stood facing the lines of police deployed at the site.
The footage emerges as hundreds of thousands of students and left-wing anarchists march through the streets against the country's education system.
The far left has been stoking anger against police and education staff, who have come under violent attack.
More than 6,000 people have been arrested in France in connection with the protests, most of them minors.
This afternoon, US President Donald Trump addressed the chaos in France and blamed the Macron government.
"What is happening in France is the result of uncontrolled mass immigration. It's not about schools, it's about Islam that wants to take over a great country that once was," the US president wrote.
