Hundreds of Turkish police descended on the offices of Halk TV in Istanbul early Wednesday morning, seizing control of the opposition television channel in a move that has drawn sharp criticism from press-freedom advocates and political opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
According to Turkish and international media reports, police forces arrived at the station's headquarters before dawn, blocked access to the building, and conducted searches inside. The live broadcast was cut off around 6:30 a.m. local time and replaced with pre-recorded programming. Station employees said hundreds of officers took part in the raid and that staff members were barred from entering the premises.
