Spanish PM: US voted against hate

Pedro Sánchez becomes first European leader to respond to US midterm results, drawing parallel to Spain's upcoming election: The extreme right wave is crumbling

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday became the first European leader to weigh in on the US midterm election results, which saw the Republican Party lose its majority in both houses of Congress. In his remarks, Sánchez drew a direct line from the American vote to Spain's own election scheduled for November 29, sending a pointed message to his right-wing opponents.

"Yesterday, American society voted against policies that only enrich the rich and lead to poverty, against hate, against toxic masculinity, against climate change denial, and against the privileges of the elites," Sánchez said. "It happened in Brazil, it happened now in the United States, and it will happen soon in Spain."

Closing his remarks, Sánchez named his challengers in the Spanish election, opposition leader Alberto Feijóo and Santiago Abascal, head of the right-wing Vox party. According to Sánchez, "The extreme right wave that Feijóo and Abascal are trying to ride is no longer growing, it is crumbling."
