A Jordanian security officer was killed and a second officer was wounded in a stabbing attack in the capital, Amman, on Thursday, in what Jordanian authorities described as a terrorist attack. The attacker was arrested.
Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said one of its officers was assaulted with a sharp object and died in “a cowardly terrorist attack.” According to the directorate, a preliminary investigation found that the attacker had planned to carry out the attack against its officers.
The attack took place on Medina Street, one of Amman’s main thoroughfares, near the Sri Lankan Embassy, which confirmed the attack occurred in its vicinity. Local media reported that the attacker was found carrying two daggers.
According to Jordan’s state-run Al-Mamlaka TV, the attacker tried to seize the weapon of the officer he killed. A second officer intervened, and both he and the attacker were wounded. They were taken to the hospital, and authorities opened an investigation into the circumstances of the attack. The identities of the victim and the attacker have not been released.
The stabbing comes weeks after gunmen opened fire at a church funeral in southern Jordan, killing nine people and wounding dozens. It was not immediately clear whether the two attacks were connected.
