Unusual scenes from Italy last Friday: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni surprised visitors at the Fieracavalli international horse show in the northern city of Verona.

Meloni arrived at the Veronafiere exhibition complex as part of an official visit to the 128th edition of Fieracavalli, one of the world's oldest and most prominent horse shows, held annually in Verona in northern Italy.

During the visit, she stopped at the Italian Agriculture Ministry pavilion, where she was received by Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida and other government representatives and figures from the equestrian industry. She first watched a riding demonstration, but then surprised onlookers when she climbed onto one of the horses and settled into the saddle for a short ride around the grounds.

After the ride, Meloni continued her tour of the outdoor areas of the exhibition, including a section housing ponies.

She explained the economic importance of Italy's equestrian sector, adding that the industry employs around 100,000 people, including those in related fields, and generates a turnover of approximately three billion euros.

She stressed that despite the challenging economic period, the sector continues to show strong performance and represents a significant part of Italian tradition and excellence. She added that the government must continue to support the industry through practical measures.

This year's Fieracavalli runs from 5 to 8 November, with some 2,400 horses from 60 different breeds on display, alongside around 700 companies from 25 countries. Over the four days, more than 200 events, shows and competitions dedicated to the world of riding and horses take place at the venue.
