British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that the United Kingdom will not support a US-led blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, distancing London from Washington’s latest escalation following the collapse of Iran ceasefire talks.

Speaking in an interview during a visit to Greater Manchester, Starmer confirmed that Britain would not take part in enforcing the blockade proposed by US President Donald Trump.

“We’re not supporting blockade,” Starmer said.

The remarks come after Trump announced plans for a naval blockade of Iran, aimed at pressuring Tehran following failed negotiations over its nuclear program and regional activity. The move has raised concerns about further disruption to global energy markets, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil and gas shipments.

Starmer emphasized that keeping the waterway open remains a priority for the UK and its allies. He warned that continued disruption to shipping through the strait could have direct economic consequences for consumers.

“The strait is shut or not free for navigation in the way it should be,” he said. “That means that oil and gas is not getting to market. That means the price is going up. That means everybody listening to this is facing higher energy bills.”

He added that stabilizing energy costs is a key concern for the British government and stressed the importance of restoring full access to the route.

While ruling out participation in the blockade, Starmer confirmed that the UK retains minesweeping capabilities and is engaged in discussions with international partners on how to ensure safe navigation in the region. He declined to provide further details, citing operational sensitivities.

Starmer is expected to provide a broader update to Parliament later in the day on the UK’s response to the escalating situation involving Iran, as tensions continue to rise following the breakdown in diplomatic efforts.
