In an unusual intelligence operation, CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted a covert visit to Moscow this week—the first such trip by an American intelligence chief since late 2021. The visit, disclosed by American media outlets, reveals Washington's deep concern about a dangerous scenario: that Russia might exploit the ongoing U.S. military engagement in Iran to escalate actions against American interests and its European allies.
According to reports in The Washington Post and Politico, Ratcliffe arrived in Moscow on Tuesday aboard a C-17A military transport aircraft, following a stopover in Riga, Latvia. The primary purpose of the mission was to deliver a clear warning to senior Russian officials: Washington will not stand by if Moscow attempts to intensify the war in Ukraine or threaten NATO member states.
