Ukraine Sea Drone Interceptor System Uses Israeli Tech

Recent footage from Ukraine reveals a novel battlefield capability: an unmanned surface vessel launching drone interceptors directly from the sea. The video shows an MV11 craft, the largest model in Ukraine's Magura family of unmanned boats, firing two STING interceptor missiles in succession from a vertical launch system mounted on its deck.

The innovation extends beyond the launch itself. The MV11 functions as an unmanned "mother ship" capable of carrying substantial payloads and operating at sea for extended periods. According to information released when the vessel was unveiled, it can transport up to 2.2 tons of cargo, making it significantly larger than earlier Magura variants.

The publicly displayed version features 18 vertical launch cells loaded with STING interceptors. The concept is straightforward but strategically significant: rather than waiting for interceptors to launch from land-based batteries, the system brings the launch point closer to where threats emerge, firing from maritime positions.

The interceptors are designed primarily to counter attack drones, including threats like the Iranian-made Shahed. Mounting them on unmanned vessels creates, at least in theory, a mobile defense layer independent of fixed ground installations. Ukrainian sources have already demonstrated STING launches from Magura craft operating in open waters.

The MV11 itself was first publicly revealed on August 24 during an event marking Ukraine's Independence Day in Kyiv. Unlike previous Magura models, which gained fame primarily through attacks on Russian naval vessels, the new design represents a broader approach: an unmanned maritime platform capable of carrying various systems and performing multiple mission types.

The Magura family has become one of the most prominent symbols of Ukraine's use of unmanned naval craft in recent years. Family members have been employed in strikes against Russian ships in the Black Sea, demonstrating that relatively small remotely-controlled vessels can threaten much larger maritime targets.
