BREAKING: Panama-Flagged Container Ship Attacked Near Umm Qasr, Iraq
This is a developing story.

A major maritime incident occurred today when the MSC SARISKA V (IMO 8715857), a 36-year-old Panama-flagged container ship operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), suffered a large explosion in Iraqi territorial waters near the port of Umm Qasr, close to the Kuwaiti border.
What Happened
The vessel had just finished unloading its cargo at Umm Qasr port.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the ship was struck on the starboard side by an unknown projectile approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr, causing a large explosion.
Iraqi media (Al-Sumaria News) and Saudi channel Al-Arabiya reported the explosion near buoy number 5, leading to damage, water ingress, and the ship listing.
No casualties have been reported and the crew is believed to be safe.
Current Status
The ship departed Umm Qasr around 08:52 local time and is now underway in the Persian Gulf at low speed, according to live AIS tracking.
Damage appears limited to the hull and internal areas, with no major environmental spill reported so far.
Cause Still Unclear
Iraqi security sources initially suggested a possible mechanical fault inside the vessel. However, the UKMTO warning explicitly described an external projectile strike, consistent with patterns seen in recent regional attacks. No group has claimed responsibility as of now. Investigations are ongoing by Iraqi authorities and international maritime agencies.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf following repeated maritime attacks, drone strikes, and ballistic missile exchanges involving Iran and its proxies. Shipping companies have been urged to exercise extreme caution in the area.
