President Donald Trump launched a public attack on Canada on Sunday, marking his first comments since trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Ottawa of seeking "the benefits of being a state, without being one."
"Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being one!!!" the president wrote in the sharp rebuke of America's northern neighbor. Trump also alleged that Canada has imposed substantial tariffs on American farmers over many years. "They have also charged our great Farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs," he stated. "Not anymore!!!"
