Former Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit testified Sunday in the trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mandelblit ordered the filing of an indictment against the prime minister in 2020.
At the opening of his testimony, Netanyahu's attorney Amit Hadad asked whether Mandelblit knew that police did not always follow the law requiring the attorney general's approval for investigating a sitting prime minister. Mandelblit answered that he did not know.
He said he remembers signing the original indictment, but does not recall whether he signed the amended indictment. Hadad claimed that Mandelblit's signature on the amended version was copied from the original; Mandelblit responded that this is not a necessary conclusion.
Hadad then asked: "Did you ever tell anyone that the police were operating behind your back in this case?" Mandelblit: "It's possible."
Later, in response to Hadad's question, Mandelblit said: "Serious things were also done in the Netanyahu investigations without authorization."
