U.S. Urges Its Citizens to Flee Iran Now
State Department warns of escalating demonstrations, enhanced security measures, and communications disruptions

The U.S. State Department issued an urgent warning overnight (Monday to Tuesday) following the intensification of protests in Iran. The advisory stated that "protests are escalating," and noted ongoing "enhanced security measures, roadblocks, disruptions to public transportation, and internet blockages." The department also indicated that "airlines continue to restrict or cancel flights to and from Iran, with some suspending operations until Friday, January 16."
Recommendations for Departure
The advisory instructed U.S. citizens to "prepare for continued internet shutdowns, plan alternative communication methods, and if possible and safe, consider departing Iran overland to Armenia or Turkey." This recommendation highlights the severity of the situation and the limited options available for leaving the country as air travel becomes increasingly restricted.
Critical Warning for Dual Citizens
The State Department included an urgent warning specifically for dual nationals, stating that "citizens with dual American-Iranian citizenship must exit Iran using an Iranian passport." Officials emphasized that "the Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship and will treat them solely as Iranian citizens."
The advisory further warned that "U.S. citizens face significant risk of interrogation, detention, and arrest in Iran," and that "presenting an American passport or demonstrating ties to the United States may be sufficient for Iranian authorities to detain or arrest an individual."
For those Who Can't Leave:
Those unable to depart should remain in secure locations, maintain adequate supplies of food, water, medications, and essential items, and avoid demonstrations. Travelers are advised to keep a low profile, monitor local media for developments, keep phones charged, remain in contact with family and friends, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates. The U.S. government cannot guarantee safety for those choosing to depart and urges individuals to leave only if they believe it is safe to do so. (Israel Realtime)
Ongoing Security Situation
The protests in Iran continue to escalate amid enhanced security measures by authorities, including widespread roadblocks and internet disruptions designed to limit communication and organization among demonstrators. The U.S. government maintains that it has limited ability to assist American citizens in Iran due to the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The U.S. State Department has a longstanding advisory against travel to Iran, which has been in effect for years due to the risk of arbitrary detention and wrongful arrests of U.S. citizens. But with the recent protests, mass killings and unrest throughout Iran, now, more than ever, it's time to get out, before it's too late.
