US-Iran Tensions: Missile Strike on Jordan Base Sparks Threats

President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States will respond forcefully to an overnight Iranian missile attack on American forces stationed in Jordan. "We're going to hit them hard, there will be a response," Trump told Fox News in an interview.

The Iranian strike came in retaliation for an earlier US military operation on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, where American forces destroyed two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rocket launchers. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had detected immediate preparations to fire rockets intended to deploy naval mines in international shipping lanes, describing the American action as "focused and precise" to remove an imminent threat to freedom of navigation.

According to Trump, US air defense systems successfully intercepted most of the ballistic missiles fired at American bases in Jordan. One missile was allowed to pass through airspace after being identified in advance as posing no threat to significant targets, with American forces deliberately letting it through. A US official confirmed to Fox News that no significant damage resulted from the barrage, which included at least eight ballistic missiles.

Jordan's military reported that the kingdom's air defense systems worked to intercept eight missiles that crossed its airspace en route to the American bases. The IRGC claimed official responsibility for the attack and threatened that the United States would pay a "heavy economic and military price."

In remarks on the diplomatic front, Trump said this week that the Iranians "desperately want to meet," but expressed uncertainty about whether the Tehran regime can be trusted to reach an agreement. He emphasized that current American sanctions against the Iranian regime are "beginning to have a very strong impact."

Shortly before the interview, Trump sharpened his tone on the Truth Social platform, claiming the Tehran regime is in total collapse: "Iran is officially a failed nation. It's dead! They have no navy, they have no air force, they have no currency, they don't pay their soldiers or police, inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in complete disarray and no longer able to properly represent the country."

On the Iranian side, officials were quick to issue counter-threats. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that any additional American strike on Iranian territory will be met with a response "several times greater in force." According to the official, the IRGC's response demonstrated that "there is no target in the region beyond Tehran's strike range."

The Iranian official added a warning that conditions in the Strait of Hormuz will worsen for vessels that violate rules set by his country, though he characterized the current exchange of blows as a "limited and contained confrontation." Nevertheless, the explicit threats from both sides raise concerns about further escalation in the Middle East.

The Trump administration recently announced what it called an economic "D-Day" against Iran, an unprecedented sanctions regime aimed at choking the Tehran regime. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent detailed that the sanctions target five key sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, imposing penalties on approximately 60 entities, individuals, and vessels connected to Iran.
