Compensation for Presidential Jet?

U.S. Approves $4.5B Qatar Tanker Sale

The State Department has authorized the sale of four KC-46A aerial refueling tankers and related military equipment to Qatar, stating the deal will not alter the regional military balance.

The U.S. State Department announced Thursday that it has approved the sale of aerial refueling aircraft to Qatar in a deal valued at $4.5 billion, raising questions about whether the transaction is linked to Qatar's recent donation of a presidential aircraft to Washington.

According to the American announcement, the package includes four KC-46A aerial refueling tankers along with accompanying military equipment. The State Department said the sale "will improve Qatar's capability to meet current and future threats and will enhance cooperation with U.S. forces and allied partners."

Officials emphasized that "the proposed sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region. It is intended to improve the security of a strategic regional partner that represents an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East."

The timing of the deal is notable: it comes as the United States has begun using a Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet donated by Qatar last year as the new Air Force One presidential aircraft. Over the past year, the plane has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential standards, including the installation of secure communications systems, internal electronic defense capabilities, and external modular shielding for multi-passenger areas. Comprehensive inspections were also conducted to ensure the aircraft contains no listening devices or tracking equipment.
