Chaos erupted at the White House on Monday evening when the sound of gunfire nearby forced a sudden security lockdown. Journalists standing on the North Lawn were ordered by security personnel to immediately evacuate to the White House briefing room, while other staff and guests were told to shelter in place within the building. The incident occurred while President Trump was delivering a speech indoors regarding the Iranian war and small businesses. Unlike a similar event ten days ago, the President was not whisked away by his security detail and continued with his remarks as the situation outside was neutralized.

The Secret Service later confirmed that a shooting involving a law enforcement officer took place at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue, roughly one kilometer from the executive mansion. According to a spokesperson for the Secret Service, "United States Secret Service personnel are at the scene of a shooting incident involving an officer who fired, at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington. One person was shot by law enforcement, their condition is unknown at this time." The area was swarmed by police and federal agents, but the threat was deemed to be contained shortly after the initial reports of gunfire.

This security scare comes only ten days after another high profile incident where the President was evacuated from a press event. In that previous case, a suspect identified as Cole Thomas Allen arrived at the White House armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and knives. Following the resolution of today's shooting, Trump took to Truth Social to praise the response of his security team. "The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter was caught," Trump wrote. While the motive of the individual shot on Monday remains unclear, the incident added another layer of tension to an already volatile evening in the nation's capital.
