El Al Halts Moscow Route After Massive Drone Attack

Israeli carrier grounds Tel Aviv-Moscow service after Ukraine launches largest drone assault of the war • Moscow airports shut down completely as air defenses scramble | Israeli passengers left stranded (World News)

Russia-Ukraine War

El Al announced Thursday it is suspending all flights on the Tel Aviv-Moscow route for the coming days following a massive Ukrainian drone assault that paralyzed Russian airspace and forced the complete shutdown of Moscow's airport network.

The decision came hours after Ukraine executed what appears to be the largest single drone operation of the war, launching 301 unmanned aerial vehicles deep into Russian territory overnight. The swarm targeted strategic sites across the country and sent massive formations directly toward the heart of the Russian capital, triggering a full-scale air defense response that brought Moscow's aviation infrastructure to a standstill.

According to El Al's official statement, the carrier will reassess the security situation next week and determine whether to resume service. Israeli passengers holding tickets for canceled flights will be contacted directly and offered alternative arrangements in accordance with consumer protection regulations.

Moscow Under Siege

The Ukrainian strike represented an unprecedented escalation in the air campaign against Russian territory. Russian air defense systems were forced to engage hundreds of incoming drones simultaneously across multiple regions, with enormous swarms making their way directly to Moscow in what authorities described as a coordinated mass assault.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that nearly 60 drones heading for the capital were intercepted, while emergency response teams were dispatched to areas where debris from downed aircraft fell. The scale of the attack forced aviation authorities to immediately ground all flights at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and creating chaos across the Russian capital's transportation network.

The timing of the assault appears calculated to maximize disruption. The attack came just days after Moscow's only oil refinery sustained severe damage in a previous Ukrainian strike, and as the occupied Crimean Peninsula faces an acute fuel crisis. Authorities in Crimea have halted all civilian and commercial fuel sales, reserving remaining supplies exclusively for security forces and government operations.

Energy Infrastructure Collapsing

In the strategic port city of Sevastopol, the situation has deteriorated to the point of complete blackouts. Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev issued an urgent appeal to residents to drastically reduce electricity consumption as the city's power grid buckles under the strain of sustained Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure.

The cascading effects of Ukraine's systematic targeting of Russian fuel and power facilities are now visible across multiple regions. What began as precision strikes on refineries and storage depots has evolved into a comprehensive campaign that is visibly degrading Russia's ability to sustain both military operations and civilian services in occupied territories.

Meanwhile, Russian forces responded with their own wave of strikes against Ukrainian targets, continuing the brutal cycle of attacks that has defined the conflict. The exchange underscores the war's transformation into a contest of strategic depth, with both sides now routinely striking hundreds of kilometers behind front lines.

Pressure on Belarus

As the air war intensifies, new reporting reveals Moscow is applying mounting pressure on Belarus to expand its role in the conflict. According to The Wall Street Journal, Russia is pushing Minsk to allow the establishment of additional drone launch sites on Belarusian territory, expand existing military infrastructure, and potentially deploy additional Russian forces along Ukraine's northern border.

The strategic objective is clear: force Ukraine to divert troops and air defense assets from the critical eastern front to defend its northern flank. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that if Belarus continues permitting its territory to be used for Russian strikes, Kyiv will target those facilities directly.

Western and Ukrainian intelligence assessments suggest that despite the pressure, an immediate Russian ground offensive from Belarusian territory remains unlikely. However, the mere threat of such an operation ties down Ukrainian forces that could otherwise reinforce embattled positions in the Donbas.
