Liberman to Recommend Eisenkot

Yisrael Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Liberman has announced that he will recommend Gadi Eisenkot. He had earlier declined to commit to recommending Eisenkot to form the next government.

Avigdor Liberman, chairman of Yisrael Beiteinu, has announced that he will recommend Gadi Eisenkot. The decision reverses Liberman's earlier position. He had previously declined to commit to recommending Eisenkot to the President to form the next government.

Party leaders make their recommendations at the President's Residence. The recommendations determine who receives the task of forming Israel's next government.

On Monday, Liberman met Eisenkot, who heads the Yashar! party, on Sunday night. At that meeting he refused to commit to recommending him. The talks were one of a series of consultations Liberman held with opposition leaders. He met opposition leader Yair Lapid a day earlier.

A separate dispute concerns the Knesset speakership. Liberman has demanded that Yisrael Beiteinu MK Oded Forer be appointed speaker on behalf of the anti-Netanyahu bloc. Arutz Sheva reported that the demand presents the bloc's party leaders with a political challenge.

On Monday, legal scholar Prof. Moshe Cohen-Eliya published a post attacking the conduct of the "Change Bloc" and what he sees as the strategy emerging among its leaders. He argued that former prime minister Naftali Bennett's backing of Eisenkot is a calculated step meant to bring about Eisenkot's failure.

"The best thing that could happen to the people of Israel is for Gadi Eisenkot to receive the mandate first, be humiliated first, come out looking foolish from every possible direction, and fail," Cohen-Eliya wrote.
