A third soldier was moderately wounded in what military officials described as an operational accident in the area. The IDF did not provide additional details regarding the nature of the incident.
Following Lone Soldier's Death
The series of casualties comes one day after the death of Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak HaCohen Katz, a 22-year-old lone soldier from New Haven, Connecticut, who fell during combat operations in southern Lebanon. Three additional soldiers were moderately wounded in the firefight which Katz's life.
Katz left his home in America to serve in the IDF as a paratrooper and is the fifth Israeli soldier killed in Lebanon since the launch of Operation Roaring Lion on February 28. His funeral was held at Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem, drawing mourners who came to honor the ultimate sacrifice made by the Connecticut native.

The incidents occurred as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the military to significantly expand the security zone in northern Israel, asserting a determination to fundamentally alter the security reality in the region. The expansion is designed to dismantle the threat of cross-border invasions and push Hezbollah's anti-tank missile units far enough away that they can no longer target Israeli communities with direct fire.
