A Yeshiva University (YU) student was violently assaulted by a gang of six to eight masked individuals tonight at a subway station in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. The attack has sent shockwaves through the local Jewish community and raised urgent questions about campus and transit security.

The Assault at 181st Street

The incident occurred at the 1 train station on 181st Street, a primary transit hub for the YU community. According to assistant professor Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin, the student was "violently assaulted by a gang of masked thugs."

Crucially, the attack reportedly took place in a "blind spot" of the station, an area lacking both police presence and security cameras. The student is currently recovering in the hospital.

A Community Under Threat

Rabbi Bashevkin expressed his growing fear of safety within the neighborhood, noting that Yeshiva is a "visibly Jewish college campus" and its students are increasingly vulnerable when speaking to JNS.

"This is beyond frightening for a visibly Jewish community in New York City. Unacceptable, short of YU hiring a private security firm to police the entirety of Washington Heights, we need a safe New York City. Everywhere."

The victim, who attended public school before choosing Yeshiva University specifically for its Jewish environment and lifestyle, now finds himself at the center of a worsening safety crisis in the city.
