FDNY - Fire Department of New York

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) is the largest municipal fire department in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Serving all five boroughs of New York City, the FDNY employs approximately 11,000 uniformed firefighters and over 4,000 uniformed emergency medical services personnel. Established in 1865, the department responds to fires, medical emergencies, technical rescues, natural disasters, and terrorist incidents across an area of more than 300 square miles serving a population of over 8 million residents.

The FDNY operates through a comprehensive network of fire stations, engine companies, ladder companies, and specialized units strategically positioned throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The department's organizational structure includes the Bureau of Fire Operations, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Bureau of Fire Prevention, and Bureau of Fire Investigation. Each day, FDNY units respond to thousands of emergency calls, ranging from structure fires and medical emergencies to hazardous materials incidents and water rescues.

The department has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 343 FDNY members—the largest loss of life for any emergency response agency in a single incident. Today, the FDNY maintains specialized units trained for counterterrorism, high-rise operations, and mass casualty incidents.

FDNY firefighters undergo rigorous training at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island, where recruits complete an intensive 18-week program covering firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, building construction, hazardous materials response, and physical fitness. The department maintains high standards for recruitment, training, and professional development, ensuring that its members are prepared for the diverse and demanding challenges of protecting New York City.
