Israel Railways has ordered the immediate removal of the Better Rail transportation app from all application stores, alleging the developer is illegally extracting data from the railway's systems and causing millions of shekels in infrastructure damage.
In a cease-and-desist letter sent August 9 to app developer Guy Tafer, the state-owned rail company accused Better Rail of unauthorized access to its databases and application programming interfaces (APIs), demanding the app be pulled within seven days.
"The application accesses and uses our data without authorization and in violation of our terms of service," Israel Railways stated in the letter.
The company claims the Better Rail developer accessed restricted internal interfaces without a dedicated access key, credentials not made available to third parties, and extracted proprietary data for commercial purposes. Israel Railways alleges these actions constitute both a breach of contract and "unauthorized intrusion into systems," potentially violating Israeli computer crime laws.
Infrastructure Damage Alleged
Israel Railways contends that the app's data extraction placed excessive strain on its digital infrastructure, causing system instability and operational disruptions. The company pointed to specific incidents, including a crash of its search and trip-planning engine in August 2025 and three consecutive failures of the same system on May 19, 2026.
An internal investigation by Israel Railways attributed these malfunctions in part to unauthorized external data access, including what the company believes to be Better Rail's activities. Israel Railways estimates the excess operational costs resulting from these issues at hundreds of thousands of shekels or more.
In a June 22 communication, the railway's director of passenger information systems asked the app's operators to cease accessing data interfaces not intended for public use. That request went unheeded, according to the letter.
Legal Threats Follow Demands
Israel Railways is demanding that Better Rail immediately cease accessing its systems, halt commercial use of the data, delete all extracted information, and remove the app from distribution channels. The company is also seeking detailed information about how the data was obtained and profits allegedly generated from the activity.
Should the developer fail to comply within seven days, Israel Railways warned it will pursue legal action and refer the matter to law enforcement authorities regarding potential criminal violations.
The allegations have not been adjudicated by a court or enforcement authority.
Better Rail has become a popular third-party tool among Israeli commuters, offering real-time trip planning and schedule information. It remains unclear whether Tafer intends to contest the railway's claims or comply with the removal demand.
