Sam Altman becomes "Ram Altman" on X

Sam Altman adopts new handle after user's suggestion, following backlash over his comments on personal computer memory allocation

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has changed his name on X to "Ram Altman" following a storm over his remarks about computer memory usage.

The change came after a user suggested he adopt the name Ram, a reference to computer working memory (RAM), and Altman agreed.

The controversy began when Altman, in an interview, addressed the global shortage of DRAM memory chips and argued that from a global resource perspective, it makes no sense for personal computers to hold large amounts of memory that sit idle most of the time.

According to Altman, memory utilization in cloud computing data centers is far more efficient.

Critics accused him of wanting the world's memory supply to go first to AI companies' server farms rather than to users' own machines.

Following the backlash, Altman clarified that his words had been taken out of context, stressing that he actually wants to increase global memory production so that individual users can equip their computers with larger amounts of memory as well.
