Israel-Colombia Visa Exemption from Sept. 1

The agreement marks a warming of relations following Colombia's change in government, reversing the previous administration's visa requirement for Israelis

Israel and Colombia announced Thursday a mutual visa exemption agreement that will take effect on September 1. Under the new arrangement, Israeli citizens will be able to enter Colombia without obtaining a visa in advance, while Colombian nationals will enjoy the same privilege when traveling to Israel.

The agreement reverses a policy implemented by Colombia's previous government, which had imposed visa requirements on Israeli travelers. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar reached the understanding through discussions with his Colombian counterpart, Foreign Minister Omar Bela Escobar. The two ministers worked to advance the agreement as part of broader efforts to improve diplomatic relations between Jerusalem and Bogotá.

These talks follow Sa'ar's meeting with Colombia's new president, Abelardo de la Espriella. In a notable gesture, the president chose to hold his first official state meeting with the Israeli foreign minister in the city of Barranquilla, one day before his inauguration. During that meeting, Sa'ar thanked the Colombian president for his decision to relocate his country's embassy to Jerusalem.

The visa waiver represents another step in the warming relationship between the two nations since Colombia's new government took office. As part of the growing cooperation, Israel recently dispatched a rescue and humanitarian aid delegation to Colombia following an earthquake that struck the country.

The Israeli mission included approximately 80 personnel sent to assist with rescue operations and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the disaster. The rapprochement with Colombia is part of a broader political shift observed across Latin America, with the rise of leaders identified as pro-Israel and pro-Western in several countries throughout the region.

The agreement will enter into force on September 1, eliminating the visa requirement that had complicated entry for Israelis into Colombia. The exemption is reciprocal and will apply to citizens of both countries.
