Global Travel Rankings: New Noise Index Ranks World Quietest And Loudest Vacation Destinations

A new global travel study created by Go2Africa evaluates country noise levels using density metrics, highlighting African leadership in tranquility while ranking Singapore and the Maldives among the loudest destinations.

Travelers seeking true tranquility on vacation may need to look beyond traditional European hotspots and island resorts according to the Noise Free Nations Index. Developed by travel agency Go2Africa, the index evaluates countries worldwide based on population density, tourist concentration, rural land percentages, protected areas, vehicle numbers, airport traffic, and railway line frequency. Each country receives a calculated score out of 100, where higher scores indicate quieter and more serene environments.

Bhutan leads the global rankings in first place with a quiet score of 89.44, driven by its extensive rural land containing over 39,000 square kilometers of forested mountains and valleys. Bhutan actively limits visitor volume through a sustainable development fee, making it one of the most exclusive and quiet destinations in the world.

African nations heavily dominate the top 25 quietest countries, securing more than half of the leading positions. Namibia ranks second overall with a score of 86.69, boasting a sparse population density of just 3.83 people per square kilometer alongside low visitor numbers in the Namib desert. Botswana takes third place with a score of 80.86 due to its low volume, high value tourism strategy, while Zambia and Gabon complete the top five with high percentages of protected national parks and pristine rainforests.

European countries struggled to rank near the top due to high population density, heavy tourism volume, and extensive transport infrastructure networks. Estonia is the highest ranked European country at 34th place, followed by Finland at 39th and Sweden at 40th. The United States scored 45.6 on the index, whereas Canada recorded a quieter score of 63.1.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Singapore ranks as the loudest country in the world with a quiet score of 6.78, featuring only 30 percent rural land and hosting over 23,000 tourists per square kilometer. The Maldives unexpectedly follows in second place with a score of 8.48, where extreme population density in the capital city of Malé offsets the quiet nature of isolated resort islands. Barbados ranks third loudest at 10.12 due to high cruise ship traffic and multiple operating airports in a compact geographic area.

Israel received a relatively low quiet score of 29.8, reflecting high population and infrastructure density. In comparison, European nations like France scored 43.2 and Germany scored 42.4, while regional neighbors like Egypt scored 51.8 and Saudi Arabia scored 65.7.

The top 10 quietest nations overall are Bhutan with 89.44, Namibia with 86.69, Botswana with 80.86, Zambia with 80.64, Gabon with 80.61, Venezuela with 80.20, Chad with 79.82, the Central African Republic with 78.18, Mongolia with 75.53, and Bolivia with 75.40. The five loudest nations recorded are Singapore at 6.78, the Maldives at 8.48, Barbados at 10.12, Qatar at 15.45, and Lebanon at 18.13.
