The updated policy, which was revealed on Wednesday, prohibits passengers from wearing revealing clothing or displaying offensive tattoos. These changes, outlined in the airline’s revised Contract of Carriage, reflect the company’s effort to create a more family-friendly atmosphere onboard.

According to the updated guidelines, Spirit passengers are no longer permitted to wear clothing that is see-through, exposes private areas, or displays body art considered lewd, obscene, or offensive. The airline emphasizes that by purchasing a ticket, passengers are agreeing to comply with these new rules, making adherence to the dress code mandatory for all travellers.

The introduction of the policy comes after an October incident that garnered widespread media attention. A viral video showed two women being removed from a Spirit Airlines flight after wearing crop tops, prompting accusations of sexism and unfair treatment. While Spirit Airlines has not officially confirmed whether this incident directly influenced the decision to implement the new dress code, it certainly brought the issue of attire on flights into the public spotlight.

The dress code policy has already sparked significant debate among travelers. Some passengers have expressed support for the changes, praising the airline for fostering a more respectful and comfortable flying environment. Others, however, have criticized the rules, arguing that they are overly restrictive and infringe on personal freedom.

At this time, Spirit Airlines has not issued any statements addressing how it plans to enforce the new dress code or how it will resolve potential disputes with passengers regarding compliance. As the policy begins to take effect, it remains to be seen how it will impact the overall travel experience and whether it will spark further controversy in the airline industry.
