The Trump administration reportedly not only wants UNIFIL's mandate ended but also its unspent money repaid after its "failed" effort to contain Hezbollah, according to a report by i24 News (Sunday).

The vote on the repeal of UNIFIL's mandate is expected to come up in a few months, though France is expected to object to the effort to dismantle the peacekeeping force, which has been in operation in southern Lebanon since 2006. Its job was to ensure the demilitarization of the region, though Hezbollah successfully built up a massive military infrastructure while they were there.

Israel, meanwhile, does not oppose the effort to end UNIFIL's mandate, as it considers the Lebanese Army to be much more effective in dismantling Hezbollah's terrorist infrastructure throughout the country.
