A commercial truck transporting octopuses to a processing facility overturned in Narragansett, a coastal town in Rhode Island, spilling a large portion of its cargo onto the roadway. The marine animals remained scattered across the intersection for several hours under the summer sun, producing a strong odor that permeated the area.
The incident occurred when the trailer became detached from the truck during a turn. Emergency crews and sanitation workers required heavy equipment and a garbage truck to clear the piles of octopuses from the road. The intersection remained closed for approximately eight hours while cleanup operations continued.
"It started to smell after the octopuses sat in the sun for a few hours", said Captain Ryan Frost of the local police department. Both the truck driver and a passenger traveling with him escaped injury in the accident.
The Narragansett Police Department took a lighthearted approach to the unusual incident, dubbing it the "Octopocalypse of 2026" and noting that it made "caution, slippery road" sign look like a joke.
