Acts of Kindness

Singer Paid Student's Tuition in Secret

Olivia Rodrigo covered the final semester costs for a stranger she met online, enabling her to complete her degree. The act remained private for over a year until the graduate chose to share her story.

A simple social media exchange turned into a life-changing act of generosity for an American college student. Singer Olivia Rodrigo helped Jamie Cosey cover tuition costs for her final semester at the University of Alabama, enabling her to complete her public relations degree and become the first college graduate in her family.

The story began on social media. Rodrigo responded to Cosey's birthday video with well wishes. Later, the young student shared publicly about her financial struggles and concerns that she wouldn't be able to afford her final semester.

The Grammy-winning artist, one of the most successful pop singers of her generation, saw the posts and decided financial hardship shouldn't prevent Cosey from finishing her education. Rather than simply posting a public comment of support, Rodrigo reached out privately with an offer to help.

She followed through with action: Rodrigo transferred $5,000 to cover Cosey's tuition, allowing her to complete her final semester and earn her degree. The gesture took place in early 2024 but remained completely out of the public eye for more than a year.

"She chose to show kindness to a stranger"

Only recently did Cosey decide to reveal the story in a thank-you video posted on TikTok. In her message, she emphasized how meaningful it was that Rodrigo helped someone she had never met.

"She didn't owe me anything, and yet she chose to show kindness to a stranger," Cosey said about the assistance she received.

For Cosey, the money was obviously significant in practical terms—it allowed her to finish her studies. But the message behind the gift meant even more than the amount itself. She asked those who heard her story to pass along the same spirit of generosity, noting that even small gestures, including a kind message to another person, can be meaningful.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the story is that Rodrigo didn't turn the donation into a public relations opportunity. For more than a year, the story remained unknown to the public, coming to light only after Cosey herself decided to share it.

Rodrigo, an American singer-songwriter who broke into global consciousness with "drivers license" and later with the albums SOUR and GUTS, is one of the most prominent pop stars of her generation. In this case, however, there was no need for a stage, an award, or a hit song: a single private message and $5,000 were enough to help a young woman she didn't know complete a significant chapter in her life.

What began with a simple "happy birthday" comment under a video ended with something Cosey will likely remember long after her graduation ceremony: a stranger saw her in a moment of need—and chose to help.
