The Wonders of Qing Gong

62-Year-Old's Gravity-Defying Martial Arts

A Chinese man's seemingly impossible leaps and movements showcase qing gong, a centuries-old tradition of lightness skills rooted in Chinese martial arts

62-Year-Old Defies Gravity in Viral Display of Ancient Chinese Martial Art

A video showing a 62-year-old Chinese man performing a series of extraordinary jumps and body movements has captured attention online, with viewers struggling to believe the performer is already in his seventh decade.

The man demonstrates abilities associated with "qing gong", a Chinese term literally meaning "lightness skill", movement techniques tied to traditional Chinese martial arts that emphasize balance, agility, flexibility, body control, and efficient motion.

Qing gong is particularly renowned through folk tales in which warriors leap great distances, scale obstacles with speed, or move as though their bodies are barely affected by gravity. Over the years, the term has become an integral part of the Western image of Chinese martial arts.

There's actually nothing supernatural about it. Movements that appear impossible on screen can rest on a combination of strength training, flexibility, coordination, balance, jumping technique, and precise control of the body's center of gravity.

One of the key components in this type of training is the ability to properly harness the body's momentum. Precise timing of leg, pelvis, and arm movements can create a jump that appears unusually high or long to the observer, even though it's executed within the laws of physics.

Age is what makes this footage particularly fascinating. At 62, maintaining the explosive power, flexibility, balance, and coordination required for such performances is far from a given, and typically demands many years of training and dedication.

Qing gong itself isn't a single method with a uniform set of exercises, it's a broad name for movement skills that have been integrated over the years into various martial arts traditions. Some of the techniques recognized today have also been influenced by how martial arts have been portrayed in literature and cinema.
