A fisherman kayaking off the California coast captured the moment a great white shark passed within touching distance of his vessel, in footage recorded by a camera mounted on the kayak.
The encounter took place on Sunday, October 25, near the town of Half Moon Bay. David Selvitsch, who was fishing alone, said he suddenly heard a splash behind him. When he turned around, he saw a large dorsal fin and a massive shadow in the water, close to his 12-foot kayak.
The camera captured Selvitsch's reaction as he realized he was looking at a great white. He said the shark's size was particularly striking, and he feared the encounter might end with a collision.
The shark passed close by and continued on its way without harming him. Despite the scare, Selvitsch decided to stay in the water and continued fishing for another three to four hours.
After the frightening encounter, he announced that next time he would not go fishing alone, but would make sure to go out with another person.
