Jordan Henderson suffered what may be the strangest injury of this World Cup, hurting his wrist in a freak accident while celebrating with teammates after England's dramatic 3-2 win over co-host Mexico in the round of 32, a mishap that has left the 36-year-old hospitalized and set to miss the rest of the tournament.
Video from the scene showed Henderson tripping while stepping over the advertising boards at Estadio Azteca as he made his way back toward the pitch after singing Wonderwall with England supporters following the final whistle. Henderson appeared to reach out to break his fall, and close inspection of the footage shows his left wrist bending in an unnatural direction on impact. He was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher before being taken to a hospital in Mexico City for assessment.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed after the match that Henderson had suffered a wrist injury, saying it just does not fit the kind of evening England had for Henderson to not be with the squad, and adding that he did not know the full procedure but that doctors had told him Henderson was being kept in the hospital. Henderson has remained in Mexico City with a member of England's medical staff rather than travel with the rest of the squad to Kansas City.
Teammates offered conflicting accounts of the severity in the immediate aftermath. Jude Bellingham described Henderson's condition as a bit of bother, while captain Harry Kane said simply that Henderson had fallen over and that he believed something was wrong with his arm but that he thought he would be okay. The England media team has not yet issued an official medical update, though the nature of the fall and the decision to hospitalize him suggest Henderson is unlikely to play any further role in England's campaign.
