Metropolitan Police are treating an incident at Finchley Reform Synagogue as a suspected antisemitic hate crime after two masked suspects threw petrol-filled bottles and a brick at the building overnight.

The attempted attack occurred shortly after midnight today (Wednesday) at the synagogue on Fallow Court Avenue in Finchley, north London.

According to a Metropolitan Police statement, two individuals wearing dark clothing and balaclavas approached the building and threw two bottles suspected to contain petrol, along with a brick. Neither bottle ignited, and no damage or injuries were reported.

The synagogue, which also houses community facilities including a nursery, confirmed that the suspects attempted to attack the premises but were unsuccessful. Staff said they are receiving support from police and the Community Security Trust (CST).

Detectives from the Met, with involvement from counter-terrorism officers, are investigating the incident and have appealed for witnesses. Additional police patrols have been stepped up in the area.

Local MP Sarah Sackman described the event as an "attempted arson attack" and expressed concern for the community. London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the incident as "appalling."

This latest event comes amid heightened tensions and a series of antisemitic incidents in north London, including a previous arson attack on Hatzolah ambulances in Golders Green in March.

No arrests have been made so far. Police continue to search for the two suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police.
